Under Focus – Dunafon Castle
In 2004, Mike Dunafon and Debbie Matthews contracted with DES Marketing to design and develop a strategic marketing and promotional plan for a new property that they purchased in Idledale, Colorado — just west of Morrison, CO. The property included a stunning residential property that they wanted to occasionally use for charity benefits, corporate gatherings as well as private special occasions. A portion of the event proceeds would be donated to support various non-profit organizations including Step 13, Central City Opera and the YMCA.
The Castle, completed in 1941, is built on a peninsula with breathtaking views of the crystal-clear waters of Bear Creek. This seventeen-acre setting has 1500 feet of private trout ponds and is surrounded by an open space park with a walking, hiking, and mountain bike trails that form a part of the Jefferson County Open Space Complex.
The castle is comprised of two upper rooftops, overlooking the large trout ponds and spectacular views of the property, which are ideal for cocktail parties, dances, or an elegant dinner. Directly below are the Carriage Hall, Lower Carriage Hall, and Celtic Room. Both the Carriage Hall and Celtic Rooms boast massive stone fireplaces, stunning old-world, faux wall paintings and a panoramic view of the castle’s stately grounds.
The biggest challenge the DES team faced was convincing the special event industry that the drive up the mountain was worth the overall experience.
DES Marketing executed a one-year promotional campaign that included a variety of marketing components to include launching a series of events designed to introduce the hospitality industry to this one-of-a-kind special event venue. DES not only planned and executed the grand opening as well as the monthly meet and greet events but developed appropriate marketing and promotional collateral to introduce local caterers, the entertainment industry, tent and rental companies as well as the social and corporate planners to this unique property.
Today, the Dunafon Castle is a sold out venue from May-September and has been featured in several publications globally.
